Capgemini’s ATCOach delivers actionable feedback

National Air Traffic Services, the UK’s leading provider of air traffic control services wanted to explore AI’s ability to enhance the training given to Air Traffic Control Officers. AIE London developed ATCOach, an AI-driven solution that improves efficiency and integrates seamlessly into the current training structure.

AIE London initiated the engagement by determining the optimal training stage for intervention. The existing training spanned levels 1 to 11 with level 5 onwards focused on simulations and live sessions. However, with various trainers potentially involved at different stages, the feedback was deemed not specific enough, often leaving trainees unclear of their performance or where to focus to continue improving.

Visualizing training scenarios

In just five days, the AIE team developed the ATCOach demo, a Generative AI tool able to summarize and suggest practices based on feedback from the NATS tracer – an ideal application of Gen AI models. The tool can also assess feedback given by different trainers, and provide clear guidance on the particular level being assessed, as well as overall performance against specific training objectives. ATCOach can also visualize different training scenarios, highlighting areas that may have been carried out well and areas for improvement, with microlearning models developed to support this process.

The project has significantly improved the overall training process, giving clear and actionable feedback to trainees that better prepares them for the challenges of live air traffic control.
