to eCommerce with Be Inspired

Food waste is a global challenge. The UK generates 9.5m tonnes of food waste every year¹ while food is linked to around a third of all human-created greenhouse gas emissions.² The AIE team decided to tackle this challenge using applied innovation by creating Be Inspired, a sustainable ecommerce app that’s powered by an AI Chef.

Based on simple questions, Be Inspired quickly learns users' eating habits and plans their recipes for the week, using an intelligent recommendation engine that minimizes in-store and at home food waste. Users can create an entire week of recipes and shopping in just a click, taking away the cognitive load of planning affordable, sustainable and enjoyable meals for themselves, their families and friends.

Rethinking the future of retail

Be Inspired shows how applied innovation can lead the way to new, more sustainable models of retail. In developing the app, the AIE team focused on the goal of ‘outcome retail’. In this approach, retailers take an advisory role in guiding the customer towards a specific outcome – in this case a sustainable, waste-free meal, rather than simply facilitating purchases that may end up unused.

A Taste of Retail’s Low-Waste Future

Highlights

Be Inspired prioritizes recipes based on ingredients that are due to expire, which reduces in-store waste.
It plans recipes that utilize leftover ingredients in the current selection to prevent home waste.
At the end of each shop, the app calculates how much food waste the customer has saved, helping to engage and motivate them in tackling the global challenge of reducing food waste.
