In a speech to the UN General Assembly in February 2023, Secretary-General António Guterres made a stark declaration: “If you cannot set a credible course for net zero, with 2025 and 2030 targets covering all your operations, you should not be in business.”
Every fraction of a degree of global warming results in loss of life and livelihoods. In 2015, with the near-universal recognition of the Paris Agreement, world leaders agreed to take steps to limit global warming to no more than 2°C, with a strong preference for imposing a limit of 1.5°C.
However, we have already passed 1.1°C and the trajectory, based on the current level of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, poses danger to lives, livelihoods, and nature, a reality already beginning to be experienced around the world.
