Late last year we set out to study the future of digital, and ran into sustainability everywhere.
Whenever we asked business leaders about digital they talked about sustainability, and when we asked about sustainability, digital was a big part of the answer.
The story we uncovered is of a widespread, deliberate transition to more digital and more sustainable ways of doing business.
We see this as the start of an eco-digital era™ – a revolution with vast potential for new economic, social, and environmental value.

There are two reasons to be optimistic about the impact of digital tech on emissions.
Firstly, a lot is being done to reduce the energy requirements of technologies such as cloud, GenAI, digital twins, and others.
This includes improvements in the energy efficiency of data centers and the development of computationally less intensive approaches.
Secondly, digital technologies make it easier for organizations to cut emissions, and these cuts far outweigh the emissions that come from the digital tech itself.
The organizations we spoke to have already achieved a 20.9% reduction in emissions over the last five years by adopting digital tech in their sustainability initiatives.
By scaling up digital adoption, they have the potential to achieve a reduction of over 30% in emissions over the next five years.

But AI is also becoming a cornerstone of sustainable practices within the insurance industry.
This includes optimizing claims, which improves the customer experience as well as sustainability by reducing the number of onsite trips made by adjusters and the need for paper communications.
AI tools are also being used to assess risks associated with renewable energy projects, analyzing factors like weather patterns and equipment reliability to support sustainable development.
AI is also aiding comprehensive climate risk management by predicting and analyzing the outcomes of climate events, which helps in formulating effective response strategies.
Capgemini and AWS have developed a machine learning based anomaly detection tool built specifically for CXOs at financial institutions.
The Detective+ tool is trained in multiple anomaly detection use cases like quality of earnings, market abuse, CFO reports, investment data, financial data, claims fraud, loss ratio monitoring, call center fraud etc. and seamlessly integrates with customers’ business processes.

By simulating various risk scenarios, digital twins contribute to the creation of more sustainable financial products and processes.
Insurance companies use digital twins for underwriting, claims processing, and fraud detection. Simulating the effects of a tropical storm on a vessel, or the impact of large earthquakes and floods on a particular book of business can aid in proactive risk management.
