Everybody strives to be part of the connectivity value chain
Chipmakers – like Qualcomm and MediaTek – made a big splash at MWC24, namely in debuting how generative AI can be used on mobile hardware to enable on-demand queries for personal devices. Qualcomm even showcased a 5G modem that can be used for satellite communications.
Deutsche Telekom entered the handset space, showcasing an app-free AI smartphone, Lenovo plans to accelerate telco transformations with next-generation edge AI innovations – or AI-ready infrastructure – while SK Telecom plans to launch flying taxis in 2025.
All along the value chain, partnerships are disrupting how 5G will be deployed in various markets. Ericsson & Telefonica designed a PoC to conduct network slicing on demand, while Nokia & Dell Technologies paired up to explore private network slicing, Microsoft has been pushing on monetizing networks through its Microsoft Azure for Operators solution, ZTE & Red Hat are teaming up to modernizing network capabilities in 5GSA, & so on. Monetization has been a key theme for MWC24, & these partnerships enable effective value chain disrupt network capabilities.
All major connectivity players were present at MWC demonstrating a collective eagerness to contribute to the reshaping of the industry and get their piece of the cake.Players are disrupting the value chain through investing outside their traditional core.
